Project
& client

Segway is an American manufacturer of two-wheeled personal transporters, primarily through its Segway PT and Segway miniPro product lines. Segway sells its products primarily in several specialized markets, including law enforcement, military bases, warehouses, corporate campuses and industrial sites. Since its acquisition by Chinese company Ninebot in 2015, Segway has strengthened its presence in the mainstream market with smaller products for consumers.

Segway scooted into our world, wanting a custom website that is fully optimized for a multilingual audience. Also, they needed a CMS that could accommodate the traffic and content requirements of not just one continent, but three! And we were just as thrilled to take a ride together. Keep reading if you want to learn about how we took on the challenge. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

A little bit of
UI and UX magic

Whilst Segway provided us with an existing design for their website, we needed to create a more user-friendly interface and give it the desired look to appeal to a cross-continental audience. We came up with a few things to make big improvements. We created beautiful parallax effects that allow for dynamic scrolling. Next we created fixed fonts to enhance readability. And last but not least. The element we’re most proud of; the drop-down menu overlay. A special effect that dims all of the page except active dropdowns. Creating an optimized user experience.

Clear and meaningful design

After defining our KPIs for web design, we got stuck into optimizing. But we didn’t stop there. The current US web design was content-heavy and featured a lot of sliders with call-to-action buttons. Leaving visitors completely in the dark on where they were headed. The new design cuts through the noise. Providing a sleek and meaningful user experience.

A streamlined CMS

Segway needed a CMS which allowed one person to manage all of their individual sites from one location. It had to be fast. And it had to be flexible. Two things their old system, Kentico, wasn’t quite up for. We chose to work with our trusty CMS partner in crime, Craf, to implement a streamlined CMS that exceeded Segways expectations.

ALL-IN-ONE CONTENT MANAGEMENT SOLUTION

Whilst certain website content, like company information, remained the same across all 88 sites. There was other information which had to be adapted to certain countries' websites, for example scooter specs. We came up with a foolproof translation strategy. With Craft we synced up specific fields for translation whilst leaving others untouched. Providing the all-in-one content management solution Segway was looking for.

Going global with a content delivery network (CDN)

We knew that this project was going to be a big one. We’re talking 22 different languages across 88 individual sites to serve 3 different continents. Using Cloudfront, a superfast CDN service, we distributed Segway's website assets to servers all over the world - 250, to be exact. By doing this, we brought the content closer to Segway's web visitors, reducing load time and delivering a superfast web experience. No matter where they are. It also allowed us to balance web traffic across the many servers in the network. So, whether you’re in Bucharest or Belgium, web visitors will always experience the same speed, quality and performance on the Segway webs

Bring on the pressure

To check if our server solution worked, we had to add some pressure. Quite a lot of pressure, actually. We used Siege, a stress test program, which allowed us to identify how much traffic each site could actually handle. This software floods each site with fake traffic and transactions, highlighting any bottlenecks in the application which we could tweak and improve. This allowed us during launch to rest assured that our web design and CMS were truly functioning optimally. Ready to take on the EMEA!

Always one step ahead

One thing is for sure. With a multi-language website of this scale, a clever content strategy is needed that always keeps the key user in mind. That’s why we made sure to take a step back and consider how the content on each site interacts.
We found a CMS platform that has a multi-language capability by default, not through extensions or plug-ins. Finally, with a website that serves such a large region, one main component was to speed up content delivery for web visitors and bring the content as close to them as possible.

Collaboration at every stage

We worked closely with Segway throughout the entire project. With a project at this scale and the design boundaries that were in place, it was important that we offered open and honest communication. Allowing us to deliver the solution Segway was looking for and, of course, Segway’s site visitors needed. And the result is more than worth it. A sleek, high-performing and super-fast website, including a CMS with the capabilities to seamlessly manage content across 88 sites. Ready to hit the road!
