Mercy Ships is an international charity that operates the largest non-governmental hospital ships in the world. They provide humanitarian aid like free healthcare, community development projects, community health education, mental health programs, agriculture projects, and palliative care for terminally-ill patients. Mercy Ships has operated in more than 57 developing nations and 18 developed nations around the world, with a current focus on the countries located in Africa.

Medical help for everyone to thrive: getting the word out

In March 2022, Mercy Ships launched the world’s largest civilian hospital ship. In order for everyone to experience it, we developed an interactive virtual 3D tour of the ship. Helping Mercy ships to spread the word and to inspire new volunteers to sign up and join the crew.

Our partner for this project, communications agency Addikt, created a campaign and event identity design to get Mercy Ships audience excited for the launch. We teamed up to create an immersive virtual experience for everyone who could not join the event in Rotterdam in real life.

Next level user interface design 

We wanted to give visitors the same experience and information as the real-life tour. Our creative team created a user interface design with a focus on user experience. The interface allows users to explore the narrative at their own pace while receiving guidance in unfamiliar territory. Giving them full control to pause and wander around the content.

An immersive virtual experience - as if you were actually there

Our technical team created a technical and functional design followed by delivery of the entire platform. Together, we created an immersive virtual experience based on the real-live event hosted by Mercy Ships. Acting as a storytelling tool, the interface strikes a balance between self-exploration and a more traditional viewing experience that focuses on the crafted story.

From 3D animations to live video footage.

By combining 3D animation, data visualizations, and video footage, this interactive experience allows users to fully embark on the Mercy Ships journey. With heartfelt storytelling, users are inspired to become part of the story. The auto pathway ensures that you see the whole ship and everything Mercy Ships does. And in order to provide a full picture, the experience features the stories of a patient, their families, the surgeons and healthcare staff.
